Vessel: Part 1

In 1947, ten year old Wesley Grove loses his elfin Momma. His Daddy died in the war three years ago. So now Wes is alone.
The only family that shows up to help is Salem Whittaker- Daddy’s cousin- who's not an elf.
Cousin Sal’s house on the mountain is little and empty because he doesn’t have a family of his own. His quietness and bad moods prove why. Most of the time he’s not there, though. Sal’s a coal miner, he works deep underground on his hands and knees, wearing a lamp on his head. His old bloodhound, Grizzly Bear, makes sure Wes isn’t by himself all the time.
There’s only one rule Sal gives for when he’s not home: Don’t go near the shed in the backyard.

Doc Philip Hess is Sal’s only real friend. When he learns Wes has come to live with Sal, he’s confused and alarmed. Why would Sal bring him here? Where danger lurks so closely? Sal’s never raised a boy before.
Philip has, though. His boy grew up and went away to fight in the second World War, just like they all did- only his boy never came back. Every time he looks at Wes he can’t help but see his boy. When he learns Wes might hold the key to fixing what broke five years ago, he fears what he might be capable of in order to make that happen.

On the same night an old bully, Bernard, shows Wes the horrible secret hidden in the shed, Sal and his friends discover the miracle to be found in Wesley's blood. The foggy mountainside becomes a prison. Why would Momma leave him here? How can he live with a monster in the backyard? He can’t forget the way it looked at him through the bars. Those terrible eyes.
The only one Wes can trust is Grizzly, his only friend in the whole world.

     Wes is scared.

With Grizzly there, though, he might find some way to make it through.

Coming soon...
